Baby Sandhill Crane

Rob took this picture a few days ago at Lake Hart. These Sandhill Cranes are always around and this time they had their baby with them. The baby is so little and so cute!

Still Working

It's 6:21 pm and Rob and I have been sitting in our family room at our computers working since we got home at 5:00. I think we'll be doing this most the night. We'll probably turn the radio off and turn the TV on around 7pm for a Jeopardy break.

Alex Who?

I have to admit that even though I've been watching The Apprentice all season, I haven’t taken much notice of Alex. It wasn’t until this past episode when I heard him speaking Spanish at The Home Depot that I took notice. I wanted to find out more about him and let me tell you...I’m impressed!

From growing up on an apple farm in Washington to studying archaeology and rabbinic literature at Jerusalem University in Israel, to completing degrees in Theology and Latin, he seems to have had in interesting life. And he was a competitive athlete as well! How does he do it?

Maybe his personal website holds a clue:
“It was on long walks in the orchard during spring time—when pink blossoms blanketed the ground—that my mom taught me how God created people to fellowship with Him, and work the land for Him. It was on sloping banks of the ancient Columbia River, where my dad taught me that if you're going to dream—dream big or don't bother.”
I’m going to pay better attention to him from now on. Oh, and by the way, I liked Craig’s box idea to begin with.

Things I Love

Beside God, Rob, and family:
  • laying in bed with a big down comforter
  • the smell of fresh cut grass
  • warm chocolate chip cookies
  • the smell of the ocean
  • falling asleep to the sound of rain
  • laughing so hard my stomach hurts
What do you love?

Amazing Race Recap - Episode 4

A recap of the fourth episode of a race around the world!

Alex and Lynn are the first out from Mendoza to Cabana La Gutana and are still out to get Romber. Not sure if I spelled that right. Second is Uchenna and Joyce. Brian and Greg are third out promising “today’s mission – no mistakes”. The first thing they do – get lost!

The roadblock – riding a horse around barrels in 39 seconds or less – no way! But they do it no problem, except for Joyce who was bucked off a few times. After the roadblock they must fly to Buenos Aires on one of two flights leaving at 9:30 am or 2:30 pm.

Romber left fifth from Mendoza but that’s okay because Rob likes “to be unda presha”. They finish the detour at 9 am. Can they make it to the 9:30 am flight where four other teams are ecstatic to be taking off without them? Of course they can, because they’re Romber! Oh the look on the other teams faces! Priceless.

On 2:30pm flight to Buenos Aires are Meredith and Gretchen, Ray and Deana, Susan and Patrick.

In Buenos Aires teams must find the man in the black rain coat for the next clue, take a train to Tigre, and find the docks in Tigre for the next clue. On the train Alex and Lynn decide to quietly move up to the front of the train for a head start. They don’t want anyone to see them, especially Romber. So who sees them? Romber, of course! Why are Alex and Lynn so are obsessed with Romber?

The clue at the docks leads the teams to a Detour; shipwreck or Island. Both involve finding the next clue in a river. Obsessed Boyfriends and Romber are in the lead and Obsessed Boyfriends just want to beat Romber. I guess they don’t care about actually winning the race. Obsessed Boyfriends end up with a broken boat and are slowed down allowing Romber to move into first place.

Romber is first at the pit stop, the polo club in Martina. Alex and Lynn come in 5th. Susan and Patrick come in last and are eliminated. I didn’t think they’d get very far, especially without their buddies Debbie and Bianca.

Next week: 2 hours of The Amazing Race!

Disney Tickets from 1994

Last month Anita, my younger sister, came to visit for the weekend and we went to Disney World and used tickets our parents had bought us in 1994! Can you believe they still worked?! Our parents bought us 4 day park hopper tickets back then and we were told they would never expire. It costs $134 for four days! On the ticket it says it's valid for all three parks and now there are four. The Animal Kingdom wasn't even built. Here are some more hilights from our day:
  • The woman at the gate who first saw the ticket laughed and said, "Oh, I've seen these before."
  • Exchanged the old tickets for new electronic ones without a problem
  • Met a couple who thought we were in highschool (should I be flattered or insulted?)
  • Saw obnoxious drunk college guys on spring break
  • Saw more obnoxious drunk college guys in line for beer in the Germany section of Epcot
  • Lost my ticket!
  • Freaked out because I had another day left!
  • Was able to get another ticket because it was electronic and in the system
  • Went from Epcot to MGM to The Magic Kingdom
  • Had a college guy ask what grade we were in (I think he was hitting on my sister)
  • Got home around 1:30 am

Happy St. Patrick's Day & NCAA Tournament!

I'm at home watching the NCAA Tournament while my traditional St. Patrick's Day meal of corned beef and cabbage simmers on the stove. It won't be purple this time.

My day started at 8:47 am when I woke up, looked at the clock, and said aloud "Oh crap!" Rob was going to pick me up between 9 and 9:15 to go to the office. I didn't even here my alarm go off at 8am this morning but I guess I turned it off! Believe it or not I was ready to leave by 9:20.

As I was frantically getting ready Rob reminded me it was St. Patrick's Day and to wear green. "Oh yeah, thanks", I said to him. I've been pinched way too many times on St. Patrick's Day to not wear green today.

After a meeting Rob and I went to luch with Karin. I ran into the table as I was trying to sit down. So that's where all my bruises come from! Karin is fun, and Rob likes her because she laughs at all of his jokes!

Back to work where I was trying to get stuff done. Trying being the key word. Rob's been very energetic slighty hyper since this afternoon because the NCAA Tournament started today. He kept coming over to tell me the outcome of the games.

We're home now and I just told Rob I needed him to stop talking to me for 10 minutes so I could blog. Right after I said that Rob put his hands in a T to call timeout to he could talk to me during the 10 minute silence.
Rob: "Can I talk to you if it's important?"
Me: "Not if it's about basketball."
Rob: (with a conflicted look on his face) "Ummm...okay."
We both made our Tournament picks and he's beating me! AAARRRGGHHH....I usually do much better. I'm in last place right now and Rob's gotten all 8 games right! The first year I made picks I came in 2nd in Rob's league. Even since then it's been a competition between the two of us.

Anyway, dinner will be ready in a couple of hours.
Hope you have a great St. Patrick's Day.

Tonight's Amazing Race, Episode 3

A recap of the third episode of a race around the world!

Starting in Santiago, Chile, the contestants had to drive themselves throught the Andes Mountains to Argentina. Romber was the first team out. I like Romber. They're entertaining. I agree with my husband who said, “I don’t like Rob’s morals but I like his scruples”. He asked a police officer to drive them to their first destination. And I can’t believe they stole Debbie and Bianca’s taxi! I don’t care much for the girls, but Rob and Amber are asking to be Yielded with that kind of behavior. Ron and Kelly were the second team out. I’m pulling for them because Kelly is from my husband’s home state of South Carolina. But they need to learn to work together better. Bryan and Greg are fun to watch. They were the only team do the bikes on the Detour and one of them ended up with a flat tire. Several teams went past them while they were trying to fix the flat. Debbie and Bianca - did they call Argentineans stupid? They were smart enough to get directions ahead of time still they got lost. They ended up on the coast instead of the mountains! I give Debbie credit for rafting even though she almost died rafting a few months ago. Romber is lucky they got to the Yield first before Lynn and Alex, who were ready to Yield them.

Then came the food challenge. One person on each team had to eat a traditional Argentinean meal consisting of 4 pounds of meat! Early on Rob decided he would quit and take the 4 hour penalty. By convincing Deana to quit and take the penalty as well, Rob and Amber assured themselves of staying in the race. Rob’s a smart guy. Uchenna is finally the first to finish the food competition.

Lynn and Alex are the first to arrive at the pit stop and the first thing they celebrate is beating Romber. I think they did some kind of victory dance? Rob and Amber finish in the middle of the pack somewhere with big grins on their faces. As Phil laughs with them Rob says, “I didn’t think I could do it but I found a way to plot and scheme in the Amazing Race”. He sure did!

Finally it comes down to what I think are the two most annoying teams, Debbie and Bianca, and Susan and Patrick. Unfortunately the least annoying of the two was eliminated – Debbie and Bianca.

The Purple Meal

St. Patricks Day is coming up which means it's time for the traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner. Rob and I started this tradition a few years ago, and his family and my aunt have been doing this for years now. When I decided to make my first corned beef and cabbage dinner I called my aunt to find out how to make it.

She gave me her recipe and I headed out to the grocery store to find the ingredients. I couldn't find green cabbage so I got the purple cabbage. What did I know? Well, I later found out that when you boil purple cabbage with all the other ingredients, it turns everything else purple as well!

That St. Patricks Day for dinner we had purple cabbage, purple corned beef, and purple potatoes!

Dark German Chocolate

A coworker/friend is here for a couple of weeks from Germany and he brought us some wonderfully rich tasting dark German chocolate to sample. It was sooooo good! I wish I had more.

A Stupid Moment From the Past

I have nothing exciting to blog about today so I'm going to share one of the many stupid things I've done in my life.

I was in highschool and it was New Years Eve. Being the good Hispanic Puerto Rican family that we were, all holidays were spent with family. So my family got together with my family (aunt, uncle, cousins) and went over to my family's (2nd or 3rd cousins) house to party on New Years Eve. Of course all of my family's family were also there and after that it just gets confusing.

So we sit down to have a nice dinner and I realize my cousin Yuyin (prounounced Joo-jing; it's a nickname) had her nice china and crystal out. As I was taking a sip of water from a very nice crystal water goblet I thought to myself,

"This glass is really thin. I wonder how hard I'd have to bite to break it."

Apparently not that hard! As soon as the glass broke, in my mouth, it felt like everyone turned to stare at me, in slow motion, and stared at me forever. I was really embarrased.

The Amazing Race

It's Tuesday night and that means it's The Amazing Race night! This is my favorite TV show right now and when it's on I'm totally focused on it.

I think the reason I love the show so much is because of the adventure and travel. I took a personality test once that suggested I needed to do at least one new or adventurous thing a week. If I didn't I would get bored with life! It's true. I have high adventure needs. I also love to travel to different countries and experience new cultures.

Because my health is so bad I'm not able to do either of these two things I love very often. So I get my weekly dose of adventure from The Amazing Race.

One day when I'm healthy again I'm going to visit all the places I've seen on The Amazing Race. And if the show's still on when I finally healthy, I'm going to apply!

How Sweet

When I came into the office this afternoon Rob said the sweetest thing to me.

He said, "Your face looks good."

I chuckled and told him thanks. I laughed because even though what he said sounded funny I knew what he meant. I've been doing my makeup differently the last few days and I was suprised he noticed the difference. He doesn't always notice little things but it was nice of him to notice this.

The Iron

Last Sunday I noticed my iron was acting weird. Sometimes it got hot and sometimes it didn't do anything. So I tried different outlets thinking that they had something to do with it but I eventually figured out it was just the iron.

Thursday I started looking for a new iron. I knew I would need a new one in the next few weeks, so why not prepare ahead of time for the inevitable. I had already decided I was going to use my iron until it died and was hoping it would last until April.

This afternoon I had to iron so I plugged in the iron and waited to see if it would heat up. It did so after a minute I started ironing. The next thing I know I hear this weird fizzing sound coming from the plug. Then it blew up! It sparked and caught on fire! It only lasted a few seconds but it freaked me out.

So, I got a nice new iron this afternoon. So much for waiting until April.

Oh, and that was only part of today's excitement! The radiator in our car had to be fixed and Rob was attacked by a snake. But you can read about that on Rob's blog.

Pocky Update

So you all know I love Pocky, right? Last weekend Anita, my younger sister, came to visit and we went to Epcot for the day. That was a fun day and I'll write more about that later. We went to Japan and guess what?? I found MORE Pocky flavors!

There was Almond Crush Pocky and Coconut Milk Pocky. So of all my Pocky tasting so far here's how I'd rank them with the best as #1:
  1. Almond Crush
  2. Coconut Milk
  3. Some other Pocky flavor like a mousse flavor but I can't remember the name
  4. Regular Pocky
  5. Strawberry Pocky but I don't like it so Rob eats those.

An Organized Office

I spent about 40 minutes this morning finally unpacking, organizing and cleaning my desk at work. I still had boxes around my desk that had been there since January and today I got fed up with them and decided to do something about it. I did a little bit of filing but I mostly threw out a lot of paperwork.

I'm not the most organized person in the world although I do have good intentions to be so. I am a clean person. When I clean it forces me to organize. I realized this morning that if someone looked at my desk the way it was they might think I was a slob. It looks good now I think. It could be better but it's going to stay like this for now.
